The Holy and Great Wednesday is the Wednesday of the Holy Week, the week before Easter. It commemorates the sinful woman who anointed the Lord with myrrh before his Crucifixion and Burial. A second theme of the day is the agreement to betray Jesus made by Judas Iscariot. The day begins with the celebration of the Presanctified Liturgy on Tuesday afternoon. Later that evening, the Orthros (Matins) follows the special Holy Week format known as the Bridegroom Prayer. Towards the end of Orthros, the Hymn of Kassiani is sung. The hymn tells of the woman who washed Christ's feet in the house of Simon the Pharisee, priest Victor Cerasau, of the God's Greeting Church in Chisinau, told Info-Prim Neo. As Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he visited the house of Simon the leper. A woman came and poured precious myrrh on the head of Christ and wiped his feet with her hair, serving him at great cost to herself. This event is described because, according to the Christ's word, her act of great fervor shall be proclaimed to everyone everywhere. The deceitful Judas began the negotiations with the wicked Sanhedrin to betray the Lord for thirty pieces of silver. Being indignant after Christ rebuked him for showing concern for the cost of myrrh, he sought out the Jews who were at the court of Caiaphas. After taking council with the Jewish High Priests, he searched for an opportunity to betray the Lord when he was alone, for the Sanhedrin feared the multitude that followed Christ. Because the betrayal of Christ occurred on a Wednesday, the Orthodox Church has received the tradition from Apostolic times to observe Wednesday as a fast day throughout the entire year. On this day members of the church receive Holy Unction after receiving Holy Communion at the Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesday evening.
