International Bird Day, marked on April 1, is an opportunity to explore the avifauna diversity of the Republic of Moldova, where more than 300 species of birds, including some protected by international conventions, find shelter, IPN reports.
Natural refuges for rare birds
According to the information presented by the Ministry of Environment, one of the most spectacular birdwatching areas is the "Lower Prut" nature reserve, where 247 species live, including 51 included in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova.
Among the most impressive birds are the common pelican and the curly pelican, a rare species affected by climate change. These migratory birds can be seen in large numbers from March to December, depending on weather conditions.
Another species is the White-tailed Warbler, one of the largest birds of prey in Europe. It can be observed in “Pădurea Domnească” reserve. With a wingspan of almost 2.5 meters, this eagle prefers to nest in isolated areas, far from settlements.
Also in “Pădurea Domnească” there is the "Land of the Hernshaws", one of the largest heron colonies in Europe. It is 3,000 square meters in area and each tree can support up to 18 nests. The birds arrive at the end of March and stay until October.
Symbolic birds and curiosities
The white stork is one of the most beloved birds in Moldova, being associated with motherhood and prosperity. It returns in spring from Africa and builds its nest on electricity poles or the roofs of houses.
For 2025, the bird designated as a national symbol is the little owl, a common representative of the owls in Moldova. It is often associated with various superstitions, although in reality it has a beneficial role, controlling insect populations.
The nightingale, known for its capacity to emit up to 260 different sounds, can be heard in spring in the forested areas of southern Moldova. Equally melodious is the great titmouse, capable of producing over 40 types of songs.
The cuckoo is known for its habit to lay its eggs in the nests of other birds, and the legend says that if you hear it sing for the first time in a year and have money in your pocket, you will be lucky.
The swallow, which weighs only 20 grams, travels up to 10,000 kilometers to return to Moldova in spring, and the hoopoe, with its unmistakable "poe-poe-poe" sound, is considered the harbinger of summer in rural areas.
The importance of protecting birds
The Ministry of Environment explains that birds play an essential role in the ecosystem, contributing to the control of insect populations, pollination and maintenance of biodiversity.
To protect these species, specialists recommend preserving wetlands and forests, reducing the use of pesticides and installing feeders for birds wintering in Moldova.
International Bird Day has been celebrated around the world for more than a century and marks the signing of the International Convention on the Protection of Birds (April 1, 1906), one of the first international documents on environmental protection.
