Italy donates humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees in Moldova

Italy provided humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian refugees in Moldova through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This is a field camp intended for 500 persons, which the General Inspectorate for Emergency Stations will use to accommodate refugees, IPN reports.

In the ceremony to hand over the aid, the Inspectorate’s chief Alexandru Oprea said that for a month already, the country has dealt with the wave of Ukrainian refugees who fled from the war. In this period, the European solidarity was felt. “I would like to thank primarily the Government of Italy for this support, for the provision of this assistance. I would like to also thank the Italian team of 40 persons who covered this road by land, from Italy to the Republic of Moldova, with the trip lasting for about 48 hours. And I want to thank this team for their readiness to teach us to use the donated goods,” stated Alexandru Oprea.

Andrea Mazo, of the team of the Civil Protection Service of Italy, said it was an honor for them to cooperate with the Inspectorate of the Republic of Moldova, primarily in these difficult times for the whole Europe.  “Our government expressed its readiness to cooperate also through this donation and by teaching how to use it. Thank you for your welcome,” stated Andrea Mazo.

Attending the event, Italy’s Ambassador in Chisinau Lorenzo Tomassoni said the total value of the aid is €1.8 million. “Italy’s involvement wouldn’t have been so efficient without the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. I thank all those who contribute to the efforts for peace. We are a team. This aid is in line with the visit paid to Moldova by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luigi Di Maio ten days ago,” stated the diplomat, noting that Italy, together with the whole Europe, firmly supports Moldova’s courageous effort to support the Ukrainian refugees.

Magdalena Muller-Uri, Head of the Operations Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova, said the people who fed from the situation in Ukraine found shelter, food and a safe place in the Republic of Moldova. For their part, the people in Moldova showed their solidarity and welcomed the refuges with their open arms and hearts. The number of refugees was rather high and the authorities had to cope with pressure, but Moldova handled it successfully. “You are not alone this time again. For the second time, Italy offers support to the Republic of Moldova through the Civil Protection Mechanism,” stated Magdalena Muller-Uri.
