June 24 thunderstorm caused havoc in parts of Moldova

The June 23 rainstorm with thunder and lightning wreaked havoc in some parts of the country.  A woman aged 87 from Chisinau was taken to the hospital after she was struck by the branches of a tree downed by the wind, IPN reports.

According to the local subdivisions of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, the roof of a five-story apartment building located on Ialoveni St in Chisinau was damaged by a downed tree. Three houses situated on Timus St, one house in Durlesti town and another one in Cricova town were damaged in a similar way.

In Hancesti district, the roof of the home of culture in Bobeica village was destroyed. In Ungheni district, slates were displaced from the roofs of a number of education institutions in Tescureni, Busila and Buciumeni villages, of the home of culture in Negurenii Vechi and of private homes. In Besalma village of ATU Gagauzia, roof slates were taken away from 33 private homes. Local commissions for emergencies are to gauge the extern of the caused damage.

As to the consequences of the June 22 rain with hail, the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service said hectares of vineyards and crops in six villages of Cahul district were damaged. Roads sections were destroyed in Baurci-Moldoveni (4 km) and in Badicul Moldovenesc (3 km). The heavy rain flooded dozens of yards in Baurci Moldoveni and 12 wells with drinking water. Specialists are assessing the damage done by the rain and hail.
