Law studies are neglected by authorities, dean

Despite the measures taken to reform the justice sector and the prosecution service, the higher legal education is left aside, but it also needs a broad reform, considers the dean of the Faculty of Law of the State University of Moldova Sergiu Baiesu. In an open lecture at the State University, the dean said there are 12 law faculties in Moldova, but there is no standardized education program of study for these, IPN reports.

“The future prosecutor, lawyer or judge must have thorough knowledge that must be acquired in education institutions. Regretfully, emphasis on the reform in higher legal education is not put,” said Sergiu Baiesu. He added that the state finances the future law specialists only in the amount of 3%. According to him, the state must lay down clear rules so that those who will decide the people’s faith in the courts of law are highly professional.

Attending the event, Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu said that if the students pass only through the corridors of the university, not yet through its lecture halls, the state will invest money in vain. The students should be perseverant and obtain profound knowledge in the areas in which they want to work because they are those who will have to do the reforms that are now being worked out in justice.

Attending the lecture, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said the investment in the education system is a key element in developing a state, while he current students are the future judges, lawyers and prosecutors and they should be well trained for strengthening the legal system so that this works on the basis of confidence and compliance and brings incomes in the taxation system.
