Two lawyers working in Chisinau were sentenced for influence peddling. In both of the cases, the sentence can be appealed to a higher court, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The prosecutors proved that a lawyer of the Rascani Bar Association in June 2014 asked €4,500 from a woman detainee convicted of trafficking in persons. He said he can influence the judges to pass a sentence favorable to her. He was arrested immediately after receiving the first tranche of the sum. The lawyer was fined 3,000 lei and banned from practicing his profession for a three-year period.
In another case, a lawyer last April asked and received €1,200 from his client who was caught driving under the influence of alcohol for making the police drop the charges against him. The lawyer was fined 4,000 lei.
