Letter Writing Marathon in support of human rights
In connection with the Human Rights Day, Amnesty International Moldova launched the Letter Writing Marathon, an event that brings together people from 78 countries, who write letters in support of the persons whose rights are infringed, Info- Prim Neo reports.
According to a communiqué from the organization, the visitors of the Central Post Office are asked to put their signatures in support of a defender of human rights from Belarus, who was imprisoned as a result of an unfair trial, in support of the women from Guatemala, who are subject to violence and are sometimes even killed, but the authorities do not take measures, in support of the residents of a village in Nigeria, which was devastated as a result of the negligence of an oil company, and in support of the Romanies from Cluj-Napoca, who were driven away.
Amnesty International Moldova executive director Cristina Pereteatcu said the marathon has been staged in Chisinau for the second time. As the winter holidays are approaching, everyone can become Santa Claus and save a life or ask for justice to be done in certain cases, by writing a letter. Last year, there were sent 1 300 000 letters in support of several persons, including Jabbar Savalan, a young man from Azerbaijan who was imprisoned for posting a letter on a social networking site. Owing to the letters collected within the marathon, including in Moldova, Jabbar was soon released.
The idea of the Letter Writing Marathon was put forward by members of Amnesty International in Poland, who organized the first event in 2001. Its impact was so significant that the members of Amnesty in a number of countries followed the example of the Polish activists.
In Moldova, all those who want can write and send by a letter for human rights at the Central Post Office in Chisinau during December 10-14.
