Man accused of murdering former SIS officer stands trial

The case of the man accused of murdering a former Security and Intelligence Service officer in July was sent to court. The 43-year-old man faces a life sentence, Info-Prim Neo reports. Riscani district prosecutor Igor Popa told the press on Tuesday that the victim had not been a SIS officer since 2006 and that his murdering had nothing to do with his previous job. Igor Popa said that the man was found dead, with multiple knife wounds, in the apartment he rented in Posta Veche neghborhood. The investigation found that the victim had spent the night at a bar in Chisinau, where he met his future murderer. They befriended, drank alcohol and then came to the former officer’s place, where they continued to drink. In the end, the guest stabbed his host 21 times, hit him with an iron and then strangled him with the iron’s wire. The murderer stole some of the victim’s clothes, a cellphone and a TV set. The suspect was arrested two days after the murder. He is charged with premeditated murder committed with extreme cruelty, which is punishable by 10 to 20 years in jail or a life sentence. Previously, the man was sentenced to 8 years in prison for robbery.
