Minimum rent for areas for bookstores opened in villages

The Government approved amendments to the Law on Editorial Activity, transferring the powers of the National Book Chamber to the National Library, Info-Prim Neo reports. Minister of Culture Boris Focsa said the amendments are designed to update the law that was adopted in 2000. There will be created a transparent mechanism for using state funds to support the printing and promotion of national books and to increase libraries' stocks. The stocks will be augmented only by tender contests involving all the interested national and local publishing house. In order to support the extension of the book distribution network in rural areas, the local public authorities will lease out rooms intended for the sale of books for a minimum rent. The bookshops will also take part in National and International Book Fairs as such an activity turned out to be efficient in developing editorial work and promoting Moldova's image abroad, said the minister. The amendments also restore the publisher's right to intellectual property in Moldova and abroad and allow the nonresidents to take part in editorial activity in Moldova.
