Mobile phone users hold over 4 million SIM cards

The number of subscriber identity modules, also known as SIM cards, held by mobile phone users in Moldova has topped 4 million as of October 1, according to the reports submitted by the three mobile operators to the national communications regulatory agency ANRCETI. As of the same date, the number of active mobile communications users totaled 3.469 million, as the number of passive users, or those who didn't use any mobile communications services in the last three months, stood at 409,300. In the third quarter, the penetration of mobile communications services per 100 population rose on the end of 2011 by 9.4 percentage points to 113.8%. This is by 14.2 percentage points lower than the average penetration rate in Central and Eastern European countries, which is 128%. In the reporting period, a mobile services user averaged 117 minutes of voice calls a month, which is by 11.2% than in the same period last year. Internet traffic generated by a mobile telephony user and a mobile Internet user averaged 41.8 MB and 15 GB respectively. In the first nine months of this year, the market shares of the three mobile operators didn't change significantly, with Orange holding 69.4%, Moldcell 25.5%, and Moldtelecom's Unite 5.1%.
