Moldova, Canada to negotiate social security agreement

The Republic of Moldova and Canada are negotiating an agreement in the field of social security to ensure pensions are set in both countries and there are more social guarantees. A first round of talks will take place in Ottawa during September 16-20, IPN reports.

The negotiations will involve representatives of the relevant authorities of Canada and of Moldova’s Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National House of Social Insurance, (CNAS) the National Council for Determination of Disability and Work Capacity.

According to CNAS, the negotiations will address both technical and legal issues of adapting the provisions of the agreement to the national legislation and the instruments for its implementation.

The draft agreement provides that migrant workers from the two states, who worked or work legally as employees, self-employed or posted staff, domiciled in the territory of the contracting states, will benefit from old-age pensions, pensions for disability caused by general conditions, pensions and allowances for disability following accidents at work or caused by occupational diseases, as well as survivors’ pensions.

The National House of Social Insurance applies social security agreements signed with 16 states, which are based on the principle of proportionality, namely with Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Greece, and Italy.
