Moldova now has fewer territorial Prosecutor’s Offices – only 14 remain

As of today, April 1, the new structure of Moldova’s territorial prosecutor’s offices has come into effect, as approved by the Prosecutor General, Ion Munteanu. The number of territorial prosecutor’s offices has been reduced from 36 to 14, IPN reports.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the reorganization aims to create better conditions for prosecutors to specialize in areas such as corruption, human trafficking, cybercrime, and other serious offenses. Authorities hope this change will enable a faster and more effective response to new forms of crime while ensuring a fairer application of the law.

Under the new structure, several territorial prosecutor’s offices from different districts have merged or been absorbed to form larger units.

For instance, the prosecutor’s offices of Falesti, Sangerei, and Glodeni have merged with the Balti Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, while the prosecutor’s offices of Briceni, Ocnita, and Edinet have united to form the Edinet Prosecutor’s Office.

Similar reorganizations have taken place in other regions of the country, leading to a concentration of prosecutorial activities aimed at optimizing resources and improving management, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors will continue to operate from secondary offices within the newly formed units.

The structure of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office remains unchanged.
