Moldova, Romania to cooperate in broadcasting sector

The Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) of Moldova and the National Broadcasting Council (NBC) of Romania signed a cooperation agreement on November 23, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We want to learn from the experience and practices of the NBC, especially as regards the protection of minors within televised programs and the implementation of digital television. Moldova aims to have such television until 2015. Another point of the agreement refers to advertising and sponsorship conditions. We want to apply the European practices in this field,” the BCC’s chairman Marian Pocaznoi said in the signing ceremony. NBC head Razvan Popescu said the signing of this agreement is a landmark for the two institutions as both of them serve the people’s interests and aim to ensure free expression and responsibility towards the public in the broadcasting sector. “We cannot be truly efficient if we are hampered by borders. We must cooperate in this area. The NBC and the BCC will inform each other when radio stations and TV channels working in Romania and, respectively, Moldova commit violations. The NBC issued licenses to over 30 radio and TV stations that broadcast in Moldova as well. Thus, the two institutions will exchange information about the irregularities identified at the radio and TV companies operating in the two countries,” said Razvan Popescu. The idea of signing such an agreement was put forward in 2008, when the head of the National Broadcasting Council visited Moldova. Moldova has signed agreements to cooperate in the broadcasting sector with Turkey and Egypt. Similar agreements are to be signed next year with Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and France.
