The National Olympic Committee officially presented the kit and the mascot of the national team at the Olympic Games in London between July 27 and August 12. The Moldovan athletes will have three kits and their mascot will be a Dacian dragon called Dragusor, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The mascot is wolf head with a snake body, adorned with tricolor ribbons. The sportsmen will have different kits for training, competitions and official ceremonies. For the first time, the sportswomen will wear stylized ii (embroidered folk skirts).
Nicolae Ceban, free wrestling master and member of the Olympic squad, said that the training was what mattered most in competitions, but the kit also influenced the one wearing it. The clothing can provide a morale boost. A special kit could make the athlete feel the support of an entire country, said the sportsman.
According to the head of the National Olympic Committee Nicolae Juravschi, this is the first official presentation of the Moldovan Olympic team’s kit and mascot.
President Nicolae Timofti attended the event. He thinks that the Olympic Games are a good opportunity for Moldova to affirm itself on the international stage. “I’m proud we have athletes who are Olympic champions. Sport is a great ambassador and many diplomats can’t do what sport does”, he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Moldovanu added that authorities did their best for the national Olympic team to perform well. “I know how much work has gone into preparations for this competition. Professional sports have a future in Moldova, although the government has some arrears as regards training camps”, admitted the Deputy PM.
The government allotted 10 million lei for the training of athletes. The Moldovan delegation to the 2012 London Olympics includes 24 members. According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Ion Cebanu, Moldova’s biggest hopes for a medal lay in the judo and weightlifting competitions.
