Moldovans' national identity discussed by experts from 3 countries

Moldova should return to its identity issue, because it has direct repercussions on the security of society, believe experts from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine, as they presented a survey on the topic on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Cornel Codita, a Romanian expert, the identity conflict gets tense in Moldova, especially during electoral races, because the state institutions fail to meet their citizens' fundamental needs: freedom, safety, wellbeing. At the same time, Moldova is mostly exposed to risks and represents vulnerability for its neighbors: Ukraine and Romania, the expert thinks. The leader of the Moldovan team of experts, Oazu Nantoi, compared Moldova to a three-star hotel lived in by a number of entities, while the identity problem is the most tough. Ukraine is also experiencing similar problems. “We also have villages in which the people declare themselves to be Russians, although they do not have Russian passports,” said the leader of the Ukrainian team, Oleksandr Sushko. The specialists recommend the authorities to draft a reconciliation statement, the citizens to decide on a common identity and to conclude “a covenant of decency of the identity conflict.” In addition to the identity topic in the three countries, individually and comparatively, the study answers questions related to migration, the state of societies. According to the authors, the Moldovan state is substantially influenced by its citizens and the by their decisions, and this becomes noticeable when discussing the country's economy, mainly based on remittances from abroad. The three-side survey has been developed in a partnership with the Early Warning Center from Romania, the Euro-Atlantic cooperation institute from Ukraine and the Public Policies Institute from Moldova.
