Employees from the Chisinau City Hall and the City Council's subdivisions planted today about 2,000 trees in a park on Trifan Balta Street as part of the annual campaign “A Tree for our Perpetuation”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said he has planted trees since childhood as he grew in the countryside and is used with chores around the household. “Actually I caught myself thinking today about that old saying, that a man must plant a tree, dig a well and raise a child. I stood for a moment to estimate just how many trees I've planted over the past six years and realized that, God be praised, it's been a lot. As for the Valea Morilor Lake, it makes for dozens of wells. So, the only thing left to do now is to have children”, jested the Mayor.
Eliferii Haruta, Chisinau's chief arborist, said that of the total number of 20,000 trees and shrubs planned to be planted in the municipality today, approximately 17,000 was managed. The remainder will be planted in the course of November.
The species of trees planted today include maple, ash, acacia and linden. “Chisinau is among the greenest cities in Europe and we must take care it remains so”, said Eliferii Haruta.
Greening efforts were organized in other parts of the capital, as well, and also across the country. Prime Minister Vlad Filat went to the Capriana Forest in Straseni to plant trees, and Speaker Marian Lupu traveled to Riscani for this purpose.
