National youth team qualify for CIS Cup quarterfinals
Moldova’s national youth football squad have qualified with difficulty for the quarterfinals of the 2013 Cup of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic Countries. On January 22, they lost the last match of the groups against Lithuania 0-2, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Despite the defeat, Moldova are among the best eight teams at the tournament. “We thought only about victory. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our best game. Our attack didn’t play very well. We struggled for something else, but we managed yet to qualify. We must be very prepared in the next match. We will fight,” said Moldova manager Alexandru Kurteian.
On January 23, Moldova will play against Ukraine, which scored a 0-2 victory in the preliminary stage. If Moldova are beaten, they will compete in the mini-tournament for the 5th-8th places.
In other matches of the quarterfinals, Belarus will face Kazakhstan, Tajikistan – Lithuania, while Russia – Uzbekistan.
