New government watchdog organization for public health will be established
The State Sanitation & Epidemiology Service will reorganize into the State Service for Public Health Supervision, following a decision approved by the Cabinet at its Wednesday's meeting, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The goal is to increase the efficiency of the public health care system by adjusting it to the latest demands as well as to cut costs in the system, improve the quality and accessibility of the public medical services.
Health Minister Larisa Catrinici revealed the reorganized Service would consist of two levels with vertical subordination, with a chief sanitary doctor being at the top of the structure.
Among the duties of the new Service the minister mentioned prevention and control of diseases, health information and education, food safety, public health policies, etc.
“Emphasis will be put not on detecting diseases and their treatment, but on their prevention, on mobilizing people's health reserves. This is the path chosen by the healthcare systems in the EU countries, worldwide”, said Larisa Catrinici.
Despite certain improvements in Moldova's health care, life expectancy remains low at 58 years, way below EU's average of 78 years.
