Members of the Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature of Moldova for the second consecutive year identified the short-legged goshawk at nesting places in southern Moldova. The Society said that earlier, based on observations, it was only presumed that this species is nesting on Moldova’s territory, IPN reports.
In a press release, the Society says that BirdLife International now puts this species on the list of nesting birds in Moldova only based on the species distribution map. Even if it is not an endangered species at world level, the short-legged goshawk is seldom met in Romania and Moldova. Vitalie Ajder, chairman of the Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature of Moldova, made a number of observations showing that this species nests on the country’s territory.
The nesting place is for now confidential, but the Moldovan ornithologists hope to identify new areas where the species is present.
The Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature of Moldova was founded in 2015 and registered in 2016 by professional and amateur ornithologists and ecologists from Moldova and Romania.
