No changes at Chisinau Circus

The situation of the Chisinau Circus remains unchanged owing to the debts of several millions of lei. Deputy Minister of Culture Gheorghe Postica stated for Info-Prim Neo that considerable financial resources are needed to remedy the situation. “We consider that the given issue must and can be solved on the basis of a public-private partnership. In such cases as those involving the Circus and other special cultural facilities, maximum attention is needed in selecting the cooperation partner. We cannot work with accidental persons or companies created two days or two months ago. According to the international practice, in these cases they choose serious companies with an irreproachable reputation,” said the deputy minister. Gheorghe Postica considers there are insufficient forces in the country, as regards investments and investors, and considerable financial resources are needed in this case that must be invested in a relatively short period of time. “The Circus duding the last five years accumulated enormous debts and owing to these debts it is hard to start the restoration works. These debts cannot be paid and thus the Circus was sequestrated,” he said. According to the deputy minister, there was named a new director of the Circus and attempts are now made to find solutions to the problems and create conditions for ending the impasse. The Chisinau Circus was leased out to a Cypriot company for a period of 29 years in 2008. The company pledged to restore the building, but did not honor its obligations. Last February, the Prosecutor General's Office filed a civil lawsuit, demanding that the contract be declared null and void. On March 31 this year, the Economic Court of Appeals annulled the contract.
