The number of persons with diabetes in Moldova increased twofold over the last ten years. The pregnant women also face the risk of suffering from diabetes during pregnancy and the fetus can have malformations. Also, the number of miscarriages increases.
Iurie Dondiuc, director of the Chisinau Perinatology Center and a member of the Health Ministry’s commission for obstetrics-gynecology, has told Info-Prim Neo that resistance to insulin during pregnancy depends on a high number of factors, including hormonal changes.
“Sugar diabetes has a negative influence on pregnancy. The fetus of pregnant women with diabetes may develop with anomalies and have a greater weight, while the newborns are exposed to a higher risk of morbidity,” said the specialist.
Iurie Dondiuc explained that the future mothers can avoid the appearance of diabetes during pregnancy by having active screening. The risk factors leading to diabetes include hereditary causes, obesity, blood pressure, and atherosclerosis. About 13% of pregnant women can develop diabetes.
According to the National Heath Management Center, the number of pregnant women with diabetes in Moldova is on the rise. In 2012 they totaled 86, by 30 cases more than in 2011.
In Moldova, there are over 60,000 persons with diabetes. The number of people with non-detected diabetes is 2-3 times higher. 20% of the persons suffering from diabetes are children and teens (diabetes type 1), while 80% are persons older than 40 (diabetes type 2).
