The number of transplants performed in Moldova last year was twice higher than a year before. Thus, ten kidney transplant operations were performed in 2015, as opposed to 22 in 2016. For 14 of these, kidneys were taken from brain-dead donors, while for the other eight from living donors.
Vice director of the Transplant Agency Grigore Romanciuc has told IPN that the situation as regards liver transplant last year was better than a year before. Only four liver transplants were performed in 2015, while in 2016 the figure rose to nine. The organs were taken from eight deceased donors and a living donor.
The number of cornea transplants also doubled, to 28 operations of the kind. The tissue transplants were the largest in number last year – almost 600.
Grigore Romanciuc said the donation situation has also improved. “On the one hand, the people became more aware of the importance of donating organs for saving human lives. On the other hand, the Ministry of Health and the Transplant Agency took measures to stimulate the activity of transplant coordinators, who last year worked more intensely. Furthermore, a working group was set up under the Ministry of Health to increase the number of transplants,” stated Grigore Romanciuc. According to him, the rise in the number of donors normally led to an increase in the number of transplants.
