While most of the people will celebrate New Year’s Eve with family or friends, others will be on duty on the night between years. Among these are the doctors, rescuers and the police.
Contacted by IPN, Oxana Bruma, dispatcher at the Automated Operative Management Center of the Rescuers and Firefighters Division, said it is not for the first time that she will meet the New Year at work, but this is her duty.
The woman said that she has a normal working program on holidays. “On the New Year’s, I can also have funny calls, when persons phone to wish me health and a good year. But there are also calls when we must react immediately to save persons. We have to deal with traffic accidents, fires and other emergencies. The people do not forget about us on holidays,” stated Oxana Bruma.
During the seven years of service as a dispatcher, Oxana Bruma received many interesting calls during the winter holidays. “I remember that once, the fir tree caught fire in a house. Nobody was at home as the relatives were attending a burial. When they came home, the firefighters were at the scene. The dwellers were scared and didn’t understand why the tree started to burn. It turned out that a candle was burning in the house and the fir tree caught fire from it,” related the woman.
The doctors have also to be on duty to save lives. During his 20 years of service, Igor Curov, the head of the Emergency Medicine Department, has been on duty for many times on bank days. “On such days, you are permanently on the alert. The number of patients is high. Many of them are inebriated and can be funny, but also aggressive,” he stated, adding that the patients are usually in a more serious state on holidays and the doctors are overloaded.
