About one thousand child car seats offered by Moldova's development partners from the United Kingdom will be donated to vulnerable Moldovan families. This practice will be extended to also include other free safety accessories such as booster cushions. The recipient families will be identified with the help of social assistants on the ground.
“We have recently negotiated with our development partners to overcome a problem which we consider to be important – that of parents not using child seats. We have an agreement with our UK partners to deliver the one thousand child seats this year to the National Patrolling Inspectorate to be further distributed for free”, acting Deputy Interior Minister Serghei Diaconu told a press conference.
The Traffic Rules don't provide for sanctions for the drivers who carry children under 12 years outside a special car seat or without a booster cushion, but a legislative proposal is being prepared to introduce fines of around 20 conventional units. The deputy minister says the requirement to have child safety accessories could also extend to taxi cabs.
According to the National Patrolling Inspectorate, 19 children lost their lives in traffic accidents from the beginning of the year.
