Orthodox Christians celebrate feast of Three Great Hierarchs

The Orthodox Christians on February 12 observe the feast of the Three Great Hierarchs and Ecumenical Teachers Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. They were highly influential bishops of the early church who played pivotal roles in shaping Christian theology. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, priest Octavian Mosin, of the “Meeting of God” Church of the State University of Moldova, said that the Three Great Hierarchs are the authors of religious writings on which the Holy Liturgies services held today daily are based. “The Holy Hierarchs show that life represents not only pray, but also good deeds, while love should be shown to our beloved ones. But they also combine pray and good deeds. The first crystallized rules for monks came from Basil the Great,” said Octavian Mosin. The Three Hierarchs cannot be put on the same hierarchical level as they are the ‘first among the equals’, even if each of them made their own contribution. “From John Chrysostom or the Golden Mouthed, the Christians inherited the Holy Liturgy that is held throughout the year, except on several days during Lent and several feast days when the Service of Basil the Great is read, 10 times a year. They say that Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian knew three roads in life: the house, the school, and the church,” said the priest. The Three Great Hierarchs are considered patrons of the theological schools. Most of the theological institutions of Moldova celebrate the dedication day today.
