People give as presents things they loved during their lives
Priest Ioan Ciuntu, the bishop of “Saint Teodora de la Sihla” Church, said that people give as presents things that they loved during their lives.
“I do not mean furniture or equipment or a bottle or vodka, because the person who died liked vodka when he was alive. We must give useful, nice things liked by God,” the priest stated for Info-Prim Neo.
Useful, but not expensive alms should be given to persons in need. “The alms are offered to persons who are hungry or endure cold, and to orphans. The grandparents give presents to their grandchildren, such as teacups, so that they remember them,” said Ioan Ciuntu.
As to the knot-shaped bread and towel that are traditionally given as gifts, Iona Ciuntu said that the knitted bread symbolizes eternity and the every-day bread, but we also need holy bread. The towel represents the road to the deceased.
The Orthodox Christians in Moldova celebrate Low Sunday on April 22 and 23. They go to cemeteries, remember the relatives who passed away and give things as presents in honor of those who departed this life.
