The competent municipal services of the Chisinau City Hall during three months will work out a plan of action for increasing the access of persons with disabilities to public areas in the city. An order to this effect was signed by acting mayor Silvia Radu.
The streets, sidewalks, squares, passages, sports grounds, access ways to quarters and other places will be modified. To ensure the implementation of the plan, the City Hall will suggest adjusting the municipal budget.
Contacted by IPN, executive director of the Center of Legal Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Vitalie Mester said the priorities should cover road infrastructure and include the placing of tactile paving, ensuring of access to public transport and institutions by setting up ranks, doors of an appropriate size and sanitary facilities for persons with locomotor disabilities.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of persons with disabilities in Moldova exceeds 182,000. Of these, 11,700 are children younger than 17.
