Platform of communication between Ministry of Justice and Lawyers Union

A platform of communication between the Ministry of Justice and the Lawyers Union of Moldova is to be set up with a view to identifying efficient legislative solutions, by respecting the democratic standards in the field. The constitution of the platform was agreed in a meeting of Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase and representatives of the Lawyers Union of Moldova, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry of Justice said the subjects of discussion included lawyers’ public appeals concerning the excessive application by judges of preventive measures in the form of arrest or house arrest and identification of solutions for remedying the situation. In this regard, there was discussed the necessity of legislative amendments that would ensure effective judicial control over the application of preventive arrest, the persons’ right to defense and fair trial and equality of weapons of the sides in a trial. The participants also discussions solutions for strengthening the self-managing mechanisms in advocacy.

Amendments to the Law on Advocacy will be promoted first so as to clarify the provisions on the incompatibility of lawyers and the mechanisms of admitting applicants to the bar, improvement of lawyers’ mechanisms of access to information and of refunding court costs.
