Population aging is more evident, census

The aging of the population in Moldova has become more evident. According to the 2014 population census results that were made public on March 31, the number of people older than 60 increased by 3.1 percentage points during the past ten years, while of people younger than 16 declined by 2.6 percentage points, IPN reports.

In 2014, the persons older than 60 represented 17.4% of the population, as opposed to 14.3% ten years ago, while the persons under 16 constituted 18.4%, as against 21% in 2004.

National Bureau of Statistics director general Vitalie Valcov said the working age population - men aged between 16 and 61 and women aged between 16 and 56 - decreased by 0.8 percentage points during ten years to 63.1%.

The sex structure remains almost unchanged compared with the census of 2004. Men represent 48.2%, while women 51.8%. The number of registered women was of 1 452 702, by 100,000 more than of men. At national level, the ratio of women to men stands at 100:93.
