Prosecutor suspected of corruption committed to trial

The Nord Service of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office announced that is completed the investigation into the case of the prosecutor of the Floresti Prosecutor’s Office who was arrested on charges of passive corruption at end-May. The case was sent to the Floresti district court, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The criminal case was started by order of the prosecutor general, based on a complaint submitted by a woman lawyer on probation. She said that the prosecutor asked 8,000 of her for not opening a criminal case against her and not informing the Lawyers Union about the fact that she took part in trials without having this right. The prosecutor was caught red-handed immediately after receiving the money.

At the request of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the prosecutor was suspended from post and was investigated outside prison. He faces 7 to 15 years in jail and a fine of 30,000 to 60,000 lei. He will also be banned from holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of 3 to 5 years.
