Prosecutors appeal probation for police officers guilty of abduction, beating

The Soroca District Prosecution Office will appeal the decision of the district court to give probation sentences to six persons, including five police officers, who were found guilty of arbitrary arrest, extortion, illegal detention and ill-treatment, the General Prosecution Office said in a press release. The prosecutors say that the police officers arrested arbitrarily a man in the street and took him to the district police station, where they punched and kicked him, in addition to beating him with a truncheon. Then four of the policemen solicited 1,000 lei from the victim if he wanted the ill-treatment to stop. Additionally, the prosecutors say that in March 2010 two of the policemen, together with a third person, were asked by a woman to punish her husband, whom they abducted, took into the woods and gave a strong beating. The district court decided to sentence the offenders to imprisonment terms of up to 5 years conditioned on 3 years' probation, plus damages ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 lei. The prosecutors disagree with the sentences as being disproportionate and will appeal them in the immediate future.
