A number of persons working on the building site where a moratorium on construction works was imposed burst in during the February 25 meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) and accused the Socialist councilors of illegally stopping the building works, demanding that the moratorium should be annulled. The meeting degenerated into chaos and things calmed down only when the police intervened, IPN reports.

The workers said they possess authorizations and all the documents needed to perform construction works on the closed building sites. As the works were stopped, thousands of employees lose their jobs and cannot maintain their families. The representatives of the Party of Socialists, including the Socialist councilors, hamper the works, hit and insult the workers and destroy fences at building sites. The Socialist local elected officials issued authorizations for the construction works and now withdrew them themselves.

The leader of the Socialist group on the CMC Ion Ceban said that these workers represent companies that carry out works with the permission of Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. According to him, the protesters work at the constructions of Liberal MP Iurie Darda.

The head of the group of the “European People’s Platform - Iurie Leanca” Oazu Nantoi suggested that the protesters should delegate three persons to discuss the experienced problems together with the municipal councilors within the competent commission. The leader of the Communist councilors Vasili Chirtoca submitted a similar proposal.

Vasile Pascari, who is responsible for meetings and cultural-sports events, warned the protesters that they can demonstrate in front of the Chisinau City Hall, not yet in the assembly hall. They can attend the meeting, but cannot stage protests during it. The police intervened to calm things down. The protesters finally left the assembly hall.

After the protest, the councilors decided to take a brake until 2pm.
