The flood wave has passed. In 24 hours, the level of the Prut water decreased by 3-6 centimeters in Cantemir and by 6-8 centimeters in Hancesti, the head of the Emergencies Service Mihai Harabagiu said at the July 31 meeting of the Commission for Emergencies, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The July floods resulted in three deaths. Another person was killed after struck by lighting. The damage caused by the floods is estimated at 142 million lei.
The first flood wave on the Prut hit Criva village of Briceni district on June 28. As the volume of water in the Costesti-Stanca reservoir exceeded the critical level, it was decided to release up to 800 cubic meters of water per second, Mihai Harabagiu said. Following the releases, Ungheni town, Macaresti and Costuleni villages of Ungheni district and Barboieni and Grozesti villages of Nisporeni were flooded.
Hancesti district was the hardest hit. About 4,000 of hectares of farmland were inundated there. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in Nemteni, Cotul Morii, Obileni and Sarateni villages of Hancesti and in Gotesti and Gheltosu villages of Cantemir.
Three flood waves came on the Nistru. The danger of floods was the greatest in Vadul lui Voda, Anenii Noi and Stefan Voda towns. The Nistru waters are moving back and there is no risk of floods now.
As many as 8,385 hectares of farmland, including 500 hectares of crop fields and orchards, were affected in Moldova overall.
