Record assistance from UN for Moldova: US$217.3m

The Government of Moldova signed a partnership framework-agreement “Towards Unity in Action” with the UN, under which the UN will provide record assistance of US$217.3 million to Moldova over 2013-2017, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the joint projects that will be implemented with the UN’s support will lead to improved living conditions, new workplaces, a better health system, etc. “Therefore, we sign this agreement not in Chisinau, but in Telenesti where we are implementing projects together with the UN. I mean the Rehabilitation Center for Women and Young People, the waste management system that serves over 6 500 persons in the town, and the Common Information and Services Office set up in the district,” said the Premier. The framework-agreement is based on three pillars – support of US$61.9 million for the human rights and justice sector reform, US$123.2 million for the development of the human resources and social inclusion, and US$32.2 million for projects concerning the environment, climate change and risk management. UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Kaarina Immonen said the new document is based on the experience and lessons learned during the implementation of the first cooperation agreement with Moldova, within which the UN offered assistance of over US$100 million. The UN helped to create a social reintegration center for young people and women in Telenesti district, to improve the solid waste removal system and to create one-stop offices to improve people’s access to services.
