Restrictions on sale of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products

Alcoholic drinks and tobacco products can be sold only to persons who turned 18. The traders will have the right to ask the buyers to present the identity card to confirm their age. Information about the restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages and about the fine imposed for not obeying these restrictions is to be put in a visible place. Related amendments to the legislation were approved by the Government on September 28, Info-Prim Neo reports. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said the amendments form part of the legislative initiative put forward by MPs Liliana Palihovici and Valeriu Ghiletski. “The Government backs the idea that the sale of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in public places should be restricted. But we cannot ban smoking in private places, in the person’s home or the private car kept in the garage. Eve if we accept such a provision, there are no real mechanisms for implementing it. We cannot ban the people from smoking in their kitchen or dormitories,” said Valeriu Lazar. The MPs also suggested banning smoking in certain recreational places between 10pm and 6am, but the executive did not approve such a proposal. “There are different recreational places. Why should we ban smoking in casinos for example. The people spend money there. No children and elderly persons go there,” said Valeriu Lazar.
