Romanian citizenship authority warns applicants to be wary of intermediaries
Romania's National Citizenship Authority warns those applying for a citizenship recovery procedure under the 1991 Citizenship Law to avoid intermediaries involved in related activities. At the same time, intermediaries say their services are useful and perfectly legal, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“There are no parallel procedures other than the legal one to request the examination of applications in a priority mode through such intermediaries”, the Authority says on its website.
Intermediaries offer their services to the applicants who have no time and, for a fee, assist these persons with filing the applications.
“I help people, because many don't like wasting time in lines at civil register offices or traveling to Romania. There are some procedures, like legalization and notary certification, which the applicant needs to handle personally”, says Viorel, an intermediary found at the Romanian Consular Office in Chisinau.
Viorel described the whole procedure, detailing the fees he charges: obtaining a Romanian criminal record certificate costs €20; for the application to be examined more rapidly, he takes it to Bucharest for a €400 fee; obtaining the Personal Numeric Code in Bucharest costs €110; and finding a domicile address in Romania, which is optional if the applicant wants a Romanian ID card besides a passport, costs from €200 to €400.
Intermediaries often lure clients by saying that they can fast-track the procedure.
However, the Citizenship Authority warns the applicants not to be fooled by the impression that intermediaries can influence a faster progress of the applications, because these are processed in strict order of receipt.
Applications for Romanian citizenship recovery may be filed at the Romanian consular offices in Chisinau, Cahul and Balti, and at five territorial bureaus in Romania.
