Only Chisinau has a seismic zoning map. The buildings in the other regions of the country are designed seismically according to a primitive chart based on Soviet norms, Vasile Alcaz, director of the Institute of Geology and Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. According to Vasile Alcaz, the designers of buildings in Chisinau are obliged by law to take into account the seismic zoning and micro-zoning map of the capital city as there are districts that face increased risks in the case of earthquakes measuring 6,7 and 8 on the Richter scale. “This map enables to reduce the seismic danger to which the buildings are exposed during quakes,” he said. Vasile Alcaz also said that the more powerful quakes have a different intensity in Chisinau's districts. Thus the buildings should be constructed according to the parameters of the map. Experts warn that the unauthorized works to modify constructions and apartments can endanger the safety of the buildings and dwellers during earthquakes.
