Siegfried Muresan: After years of stagnation, starting reforms in Moldova was a difficult process

After decades in which almost nothing has happened in Moldova's justice system, it is clear that starting reforms has been a difficult process. There is clearly resistance, says MEP Siegfried Muresan. In an interview with IPN, he said that judges and prosecutors who have not been taught to be independent, who have responded to orders in the past, do not want this change and it is clear that change is coming slower than people want it to.

"It's including from those who may have broken the law in the past and don't want to be held to account, from those suspected of corruption. So, there is resistance here, this is an area where I think a lot of attention is needed, but I think it is also one of the most important and urgent areas", Muresan said

However, the official said that the pace of reforms in Moldova's EU accession process is good.

"Let's not forget that in recent years, in parallel with the reform process, the Republic of Moldova has also had to face several crises. However, reforms have started. I understand people who want more, faster, but if we look at the decades of stagnation, it is clear and I think we all feel that the Republic of Moldova is going in the right direction", said the MEP.

Muresan expressed confidence that the reform process in the Republic of Moldova will move forward and will also be encouraged by the EU accession negotiations, because after all, accession negotiations mean a process of modernization and reform.
