The police have stopped a truck with watermelons on the Bender-Chisinau road, near Roscana village. The 26 year old driver lacked documents of origin for the cargo.

The man was transporting 5.7 tonnes of watermelons. He said he had bought them in the Transnistrian region and planned to sell it in Chisinau. The load, worth over 26,000 lei, was seized by the police. The driver is under contraventional investigation and faces a fine of up to 3000 lei.

Mariana Betivu, press officer of the General Police Inspectorate, told IPN that should the tests prove the watermelons safe for consumption, they will be sold and the money will be transferred to the state budget. If the quality of watermelons is below standards, they will be disposed of.
