Moldova's agriculture is facing a new major danger: insufficient soil moisture. In the “National Consensus” program on Rlive channel, experts drew attention to the fact that official data indicate a considerable reduction in moisture, which will directly affect the productivity of agricultural crops, IPN reports.

"Official sources show a reduction in soil moisture. This is quite alarming for agriculture, especially for plant growers. If we have such trends in the future, there are preconditions for anticipating considerable losses at the next harvest," said Sergiu Dobrojan, head of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office of the Moldova State University and an expert in the field of environment.

The expert stressed that 2025 promises to be a problematic year, with a prolonged dry period.

"The data show that this year we will face a period of drought. The latest information says that we will have a period of high temperatures, for about 80 days, which is quite alarming," said Sergiu Dobrojan.

For his part, Iurie Uşelu, a representative of the Consolidated IFAD Program Implementation Unit, said that the soil moisture diminution trend expands from year to year and the impact of global warming is increasingly visible.

"The amount of moisture in soil decreases every year. Compared to the 1060s and 1970s, the temperature has risen by 1.5 degrees and this is a lot. The first group crops could still yield if the rain in April-May compensate for the lack of moisture to ensure a good harvest. At high risk are the second group crops and multiannual crops, which are much more exposed to the drought period. It is expected that 60-80 days will be without precipitation. This period is forecast to start with June 10-20," stated Iurie Uşelu.

In this connection, specialists urge farmers to implement water conservation measures. Experts also recommend farmers to cultivate drought-tolerant plants by choosing varieties adapted to climatic conditions.
