Some rutiera drivers 'joined strike under pressure'

The recent strike action of the rutiera drivers was partially organized with the use of pressure, Chisinau's transportation chief Adrian Boldurescu told the City Hall's ordinary meeting on Monday. Adrian Boldurescu said he had a meeting last week with the rutiera administrators, where it was revealed that some drivers were perfectly fine with the current conditions. “Those drivers joined the stoppage on September 27 only because they feared that their tires would be punctured and their windshields broken”, claims Boldurescu. Concerning last week's traffic accidents involving rutieras, Adrian Boldurescu said the drivers were fined and fired. Deputy Mayor Nistor Grozavu, who chaired the meeting, stated that private carriers should fulfill their commitments assumed when fares were increased in 2006 before any negotiation could take place on a further raise. The drivers and owners of routed minibuses, colloquially known as rutieras or marshrutkas, arguably the most popular means of transport in Chisinau, engaged in a three-day strike in late September in a bid to persuade the municipal authorities into increasing the fare. They agreed to resume work on condition that the issue is discussed at the next meeting of the City Council.
