Speeding – cause of each second road accident in Moldova

A number of 2,270 road accidents have happened in Moldova in the ten months to October. They resulted in 366 deaths and 2,797 persons injured. In 2008, the number of accidents was 2,869, with 500 persons dead and 3,494 injured. The data was presented at a meeting by Minister of the Interior Victor Catan, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the official, speeding is the cause of each second traffic accident, the non-stopping at crosswalks – of each seventh accident, while driving under the influence – of each tenth accident. Victor Catan said that 50,000 reports against drivers have been drawn up since June 1, 2009, when the new Code of Administrative Offences came into force. About 10,000 of the reports concerned speeding, 4,000 – non-fastening of the seatbelt, while 1,834 – driving under the influence. There were imposed more than 50,000 fines to the value of 17.3 million lei. The minister said that a five-year national road safety plan, until 2014, is now being worked out. He stressed the necessity of creating the Road Safety Agency.
