According to the preliminary data of the 2024 Population and Housing Census, the population of the Republic of Moldova is 2 401 200 people, 52.9% of whom are women and 47.1% - men. These statistics indicate both demographic discrepancies and relevant aspects in the daily lives of the two gender groups, such as education, employment and health status, IPN reports.
Nationally, women outnumber men. The discrepancy is greater in the 35-64 age group and the over-65 age group. By contrast, men predominate among children (aged 0-14), with a ratio of 106 boys to 100 girls.
Life expectancy is higher for women, at 76.4 years, compared with 67.5 years for men, with the difference of almost 9 years attributed to higher premature mortality among men.
The figures also show that women marry earlier than men. The average age at first marriage is 27 for women and 30 for men.
At the same time, women have a higher level of education than men, in higher education and master's studies. The fields preferred by girls include education and health sciences, while boys are mainly attracted to IT and engineering.
In the labor market, more women are employed in services, but they generally have a lower employment rate than men. In 2023, the share of employed women was 39.7%, compared with 47.1% for men. Earnings are also lower for women, who receive on average 15.6% less than men, with the pay gap being significant in several sectors, including IT and finance.
