Strengthening Media Community at Regional Level Project completed
The Independent Press Association (API) held a news conference to announce the results of the Strengthening Media Community at Regional Level in Moldova Project that lasted for five months. The project was implemented with the support of the UNESCO Moscow Office (US$20,000) and the International Network of Universities (INU) in Moldova.
Over June-October 2009, the API financed five media campaigns conducted by journalists of radio stations and TV channels from Cimislia, Nisporeni, Drochia, Rezina and Soldanesti districts.
API executive director Petru Macovei has told Info-Prin Neo that the five media campaigns were aimed at promoting the Millennium Development Goals: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, develop a Global Partnership for Development .
Kaarina Immonen, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, said the UN will continue to support the efforts made by the press to maintain a continuous dialogue between the government and the society.
The results of the contest for the best media campaign to promote the Millennium Development Goals were announced at the end of the conference. An independent jury composed of journalists and NGO leaders decided that the best campaign was carried out by journalists of the newspaper “Glia Drociana” and their colleagues from “Drochia TV”.
The top prize was a notebook with licensed software purchased from the money offered by the UNESCO Moscow Office. Also, the API and the UN offered two encouragement prizes of US$500 to the teams of journalists from Cimislia (newspaper “Business Info”, TV cannel “Media TV” and radio station “Radio Media”) and from Soroca (newspaper “Observatorul de Nord” and TV channel “Sor TV”).
