Moldova's State Register of Drivers contains 695,700 male motorists and 171,400 female motorists, operating nearly 686,000 vehicles. This information was presented at an open day event held by the State Registration Center “Registru”, Info-Prim Neo reports. The event was part of the program of events dedicated to the 2011-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety, a global awareness-raising campaign held under the aegis of the World Health Organization. Vasile Ciornyi, vice-director of Registru, said that until 1974 vehicle registration was handled by rayonal and town traffic inspectorates. After cardinal reforms, a number of territorial subdivisions were formed for this purpose and in 1996, the Department for Vehicle Registration and Drivers Qualification already included 15 subdivisions. Last year Moldova signed the United Nations' resolution on the 2011-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety, whose target is to reduce road traffic deaths by 50 percent in the next ten years. Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death among children and youths aged 5 to 29 years. Almost half of road accident victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
