Traffic police propose scrapping alcohol blood test

The traffic police propose scrapping alcohol content blood tests on drunk drivers. According to the head of the Traffic Police Department, Sergiu Diaconu, the device called Alcotest Drager determines alcohol content in the blood flow accurately, and it can also retain the registered data, Info-Prim Neo reports. Sergiu Diaconu told a press conference that double-testing must be excluded because a good deal of the drivers detected as DUI go unpunished because they are declared sober after the blood test. “The man goes to the doctor drunk and comes out sober”, said the chief of Traffic Police, inferring that corruption is involved. According to Diaconu, there is at least one such device in every district, 2 in Chisinau and 3 at the special force battalion, and 40 in total. The Traffic Police have ordered another 10 devices, each priced at around 35-50 thousand lei. The Traffic Police plan to toughen sanctions for DUI drivers, setting a maximum fine of 10 thousand lei and confiscating the vehicle for repeated offenses. The proposal to exclude double-testing could be approved this year, and more time would be required for toughening the sanctions, as they require modifying more than one law, said the head of the Traffic Police Department. On August 17, the police started operation “White Nights”, during which 2,300 drivers have been checked, 311 of whom were driving under heavy influence of alcohol. Among the culprits, there are 6 who are employees for the Ministry of Interior. The campaign will last until September 17. There were 5,000 drivers caught DUI in 2011, 1,100 of whom went scot-free after undergoing blood tests.
