Prime Minister Pavel Filip ordered to create an inter-ministerial working group that would draft a plan of action for remedying the situation in the hydrological system of the Republic of Moldova. In a working meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his concern about the reported intention of Ukraine to build six new hydropower plants upstream of the hydroelectric plant in Novodnestrovsk, IPN reports.
According to the Government’s press service, all the relevant bilateral and international documents signed by Moldova and Ukraine will be inventoried in this connection. These include the two countries’ Association Agreements with the EU and the made ecological and investments commitments.
Pavel Filip said the executive was warned about the negative impact of the hydroelectric complex in Novodnestrovsk by a number of NGOs and the scientific community. This poses a threat to biodiversity and the aquatic resources of the Nistru River. Owing to this complex, the water self-purification capacities decreased because of the deterioration of the thermal regime. The volume of the accumulation reservoir in Dubasari and the recreational potential in the adjoining areas diminished.
