UN Global Road Safety Week launched

Two children lost their lives and another 50 were hurt in accidents on Moldova’s roads in the first four months of this year. The data were presented by the National Patrolling Inspectorate on the occasion of the launch of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week in Moldova, IPN reports.

The Inspectorate’s head Marin Maxian said that Moldova pledged to halve the number of cases of child injury in road accidents by 2020. According to the preliminary data, the number of such cases fell by 35% since 2014, while of death – by 54%.

Deputy Minister of Health Svetlana Cotelea said it is very important to understand that the deaths and injuries caused by road accidents can be prevented. The Road Safety Week this year is held under the slogan “Save children’s lives!” Twenty children died in road accidents in Moldova in 2014.

The WHO Representative and Head of Country Office in Moldova Jarno Habicht said the number of deaths as a result of traffic accidents can be decreased by obeying three basic rules: reducing the travelling speed, not driving under the influence and wearing reflectors. “We must allow no case of death in traffic, while the EU aims to reduce the cases of death in accidents to zero, an example that Moldova can also follow,” he stated.

On the occasion of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week that will take place between May 1 and May 29, the General Police Inspectorate, the Repemol Project and Automobil Club will carry out the operation “Warning for the pedestrian” that will include road safety activities involving children.
