The UN Organization's will stage a human rights promotion drive in Moldova in the wake of the 60th Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The announcement was made on November 12 as a Global Report “The State of the World Population in 2008” was launched in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Although the Government has adopted numerous laws, action plans and programs that can serve as a basis for the human rights and freedoms, practically they are not functional. That is why it is imperiously necessary to roll out campaigns to change not only the population's attitude, but also the attitude of decision-makers,” said Boris Galca, a coordinator with the UNFPA office to Moldova.
The campaign will start with a movie festival running from December 3 to 9. The projections will run in Chisinau, Cahul, Balti and Tiraspol. The band Zdob si Zdub will act as a promoter of the event.
Another event consists in awarding the most valuable initiative and actions related to the defense of human rights promoted by Moldovan NGOs and media.
The global report on the state of the world population in 2008, developed by the UNFPA, analyzes the present situation through the concept of culture. This year it does not refer to the situation in Moldova.
The report finds that, although actions are unfolded internationally to promote gender equality, it is not present in many cultures. The gender violence is perpetuated by tradition, by man and women accepting violence as something normal and inherent in a society.
According to the report, the women and girls account for 3/5 of the one billion people stricken by total poverty. The women account for 2/3 of 960 million illiterate adults. The girls represent 70% of those 130 million children not attending school.
