UNICEF will donate 500 assistive devices to support children with visual and hearing impairments. The shipment, valued at over 3 million lei, includes advanced tools such as screen-reading software and adapted keyboards, IPN reports.
This initiative is part of the "Digital Innovations for the Educational System of the Republic of Moldova" program, designed to enhance inclusivity in education.
“By integrating assistive technologies into our educational system, we ensure that children with special needs have equal opportunities. This effort aligns with our commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable educational system that prepares all children for the challenges of the future”, stated Dan Perciun, Minister of Education and Research.
Maha Damaj, UNICEF Moldova Representative, emphasized that "access to assistive technology means more than inclusion - it signifies transformation". She said, "Today’s school reflects tomorrow’s society, and by equipping children with special needs with the necessary tools, we are laying the foundation for a more inclusive, innovative, and equitable world".
Jānis Mažeiks, the EU Ambassador to Moldova, noted that the EU and its member states are the largest contributors to the Global Partnership for Education Fund, which has committed €700 million for the 2021–2027 period to foster inclusive education, particularly for girls, refugees, and children from fragile contexts. “By investing in education, including for children with special needs, we not only unlock individual potential but also empower Moldova's future workforce to contribute to the green and digital transitions that will shape Europe’s shared future”, the European diplomat stated.
The acquisition of assistive technology was based on a detailed needs analysis of specialized educational institutions. The official handover event will take place on December 11 at the Government House.
